Day 1 – Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

The journey begins with a scenic 3-hour drive from Arusha to Machame Gate for registration. From there, we proceed through lush villages, coffee, and banana plantations to Umbwe Gate. The trail climbs sharply along a forest path that winds through vibrant rainforest. As the path narrows, we ascend between two rivers surrounded by towering trees. Umbwe Camp is nestled within thick forest, providing a peaceful end to a rewarding day.
Day 2 – Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
• Elevation: 9,514 ft to 13,044 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 6 km | 4 miles
• Habitat: Heath
Today, the trail becomes rockier with sparse undergrowth and moss-covered trees. Gaining altitude, we start to catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s impressive peak. Descending into Barranco Valley, we pass through the unique Senecio Forest before reaching Barranco Camp.
Day 3 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
• Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 5 km | 3 miles
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Our morning begins with a descent into a ravine leading to the Great Barranco Wall. After a challenging climb, we reach the top of the wall, greeted by incredible views. The trail then takes us over hills and valleys to Karanga Camp. This shorter trek is excellent for acclimatization.
Day 4 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
• Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Distance: 4 km | 2 miles
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Following the Southern Circuit, we reach Barafu Hut, where you have 360-degree views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. We set up camp at Barafu, where climbers can relax, dine early, and prepare for the summit.
Day 5 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp
• Elevation Gain: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft
• Elevation Loss: 19,341 ft to 15,331 ft
• Total Distance: 11 km | 6.8 miles
• Hiking Time: 10-12 hours
• Habitat: Arctic to Alpine Desert
An early ascent brings us to the summit. Around 16,500 ft, we witness the sunrise—a truly unforgettable sight as the first rays of light reveal Kilimanjaro’s stunning landscape. We continue toward Stella Point (18,900 ft) before the final stretch to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After capturing the moment at the summit, we return to Barafu Camp for a second night, allowing climbers to rest and descend more gradually.
Day 6 – Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp
• Elevation: 15,331 ft to 10,000 ft
• Distance: 8 km | 4.97 miles
• Hiking Time: 4 hours
• Habitat: Heather Zone
Following a restful night at Barafu, we begin our descent to Mweka Camp. Upon arrival, we celebrate our achievement together with the entire team.
Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
• Elevation: 10,065 ft to 6,000 ft
• Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
• Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
• Habitat: Rainforest
Our last descent through the rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive certificates of achievement. Afterward, we celebrate with lunch in Mweka Village and return to Arusha.
